Phenyl silicone rubber used in aerospace materials has good resistance to radiation degradation, excellent ozone resistance, and excellent thermal cycling resistance. It has obvious advantages because it can withstand the extreme temperatures in space and maintain good flexibility at very low temperatures (other materials will harden and crack), and its elastomeric properties can suppress the adverse effects of launch vibrations. And the performance changes encountered in space flight, such as temperature changes that can cause a surface to shrink or hinder the propagation of electromagnetic waves and subatomic particles, and phenyl silicone rubber has good high and low temperature resistance, which can well resolve this problem.
Although radiation in space can cause changes in the performance of space materials similar to thermal aging, some special silicone materials, such as phenyl silicone rubber, have excellent radiation resistance. They are suitable for use under radiation conditions and still maintain good mechanical properties.
