Overview of Silicone Polymers

Hits: 379 img

Silicone materials mainly refer to oligomers or polymers containing polysiloxane as the main chain. Such compounds are often called Silicone in English. The word Silicone is made up of a prefix (Silic) and a ketone suffix (-one). The word was first coined by German chemist F. Wohler in 1857, but it was F. S. Kipping who really used it widely and popularized it. He used the term to describe polydiphenylsiloxane, the product of the hydrolysis and condensation of diphenyldichlorosilane. Kipping also knew at the time that polydiphenylsiloxanes are high molecular weight compounds and diphenylketones are small molecules, and pointed out their completely different chemistries. Silicone is now commonly used to define polymerized siloxane products, although it has long been found that due to its larger covalent radius, silicon is more likely to form two single bonds with two oxygen atoms, rather than a silicon-oxygen double bond. , and generally refers to products that are complex and often cannot be defined in precise scientific terms, which are often mixtures of many components.

From the classification of product form, silicone materials can be mainly divided into silicone oil (silicone oil or silicone fluid) (including silicone grease, silicone emulsion, silicone surfactant, etc.), silicone rubber (including room temperature vulcanization and high temperature vulcanization) Silicone rubber), silicone resin (silicone resin) and silane coupling agent (silane cou-pling agent), etc.

Silicone oil and silicone oil products are an important class of silicone materials. There are many varieties and can be divided into two categories: ordinary silicone oil and modified silicone oil. Polyether modification accounts for the vast majority of modified silicone oils, followed by chlorine group modification, epoxy modification, alkyl modification, hydroxyl modification, mercapto modification, alcohol modification silicone oil, etc. Silicone oil products are mainly defoamer, release agent, paper release agent, fabric finishing agent and silicone grease. Silicone resin has a series of products such as lubrication, electrical insulation, anti-pollution flashover and thermal conductivity. The main demand industries are machinery industry, electronic power industry, chemical industry, textile dyeing and finishing industry, paper products, medicine and cosmetics industry.

Silicone rubber is the one with the largest output and the largest variety of silicone products. According to the raw rubber structure, silicone rubber can be divided into methyl silicone rubber, methyl vinyl silicone rubber, phenyl silicone rubber, cyanosilicone rubber and fluorosilicone rubber. According to its vulcanization temperature, silicone rubber is divided into two types: high-temperature-vulcanized (HTV) and room-temperature-vulcanized (RTV). RTV silicone rubber generally includes two categories: condensation type and addition type. The three major demand industries for silicone rubber are construction, electrical and electronic industries and automobiles.

Silicone resin is one of the main categories of silicone products. Although it is the earliest among the silicone materials, it has relatively few varieties and a small market share. The main purpose is to formulate various electrical insulating paints, weather-resistant paints, plastic surface wear-resistant paints and high-temperature-resistant paints. In addition, it is also used as mica binder, asbestos cloth glass cloth impregnating paint, cement and masonry waterproofing agent, etc. It has a wide range of applications in aerospace, electronic appliances, construction, machinery manufacturing, etc.

Silane coupling agent is essentially a type of silane with organic functional groups, and in its molecule it has both reactive groups that can be chemically combined with inorganic materials and groups that are compatible or chemically combined with organic materials. It was first used in the surface treatment of glass fibers in glass fiber reinforced plastics. And now its use has been expanded to improve the properties of various polymer composite materials, and its dosage is increasing year by year at home and abroad.
