The applications of silicone rubber in the aerospace field are extensive and vital.
1. Sealing materials
Although the mechanical strength of silicone rubber is slightly inferior to other rubbers at room temperature, it has excellent performance in harsh environments. It has become an important material in the aerospace field due to its high elasticity, high and low temperature resistance, aging resistance and biocompatibility. Silicone rubber adhesives can be used for flexible bonding and thermal insulation sealing of aircraft structural layers and thermal insulation layers. Solid silicone rubber sealing materials are even more common in the aerospace industry, such as sealing of rocket windows, spacecraft docking, gas systems and other parts. Silicone rubber sealing rings and gaskets play an important role in isolating the engine compartment from the external environment. The silicone rubber sealing material developed by the Institute of Aerospace Materials and Technology has outstanding heat and cold resistance. The long-term use temperature is -60℃ ~ 250℃, and the short-term use temperature can exceed 300℃. It can also withstand instantaneous high-temperature ablation exceeding 3000K, and has excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight, mildew, and seawater.
2. Damping materials
The damping mechanism of silicone rubber damping materials is that when polymer viscoelastic materials are subjected to stress and strain, the bent molecular chains undergo deformations such as stretching and bending, and the molecular chains also twist and slip. After the external force disappears, the elastic part restores some molecular chains to their original positions, and the viscous part prevents the slippage between chain segments from being fully restored, resulting in permanent deformation, thereby consuming part of the energy in the form of heat. Although silicone rubber originally had a small damping loss as a damping material, with the emergence of new high-damping silicone rubber materials and the application of new blending technologies, it is gradually replacing traditional butyl rubber and becoming the first choice in aerospace damping and vibration reduction structures. Its applications are becoming increasingly widespread, such as shockproof materials for heat sinks and instrument shock absorption systems. In the past decade, significant progress has been made in the research and application of silicone rubber damping materials. The developed wide-temperature, wide-band, high-damping materials have a damping coefficient β ≥ 0.3 within the temperature range of -50°C to 150°C.
3. Thermal Conductive Damping Materials
As the integration of electronic equipment in aerospace products increases, the power and heat generation are increasing, requiring efficient heat dissipation. When performing damping and vibration reduction treatment on the structure, it is necessary to improve the vibration dynamic environment of the electronic equipment and meet the heat dissipation requirements, which makes thermal conductive damping materials the key. Silicone rubber also has broad application prospects in this regard.
