Classification and Recent Research Progress of Silicone Rubber

Hits: 695 img

Silicone rubber is classified into three major categories based on its vulcanization mechanism: heat-vulcanized, room-temperature-vulcanized, and addition-reaction-type. Among them, heat-vulcanized silicone rubber, the earliest type to be applied, possesses high molecular weights and commonly uses organic peroxides as vulcanizing agents, achieving vulcanization through heating.

This category encompasses diverse silicone rubbers, such as polydimethylsiloxane rubber, methylvinylsilicone rubber, and phenyl silicone rubber, each with unique properties and applications. For instance, polydimethylsiloxane rubber maintains good elasticity from -60°C to 250°C, while methylvinylsilicone rubber stands out for its excellent processability and widespread applicability.

In recent years, research on silicone rubber has made notable advancements. The research team led by Professor Liangbin Li at the University of Science and Technology of China has achieved a breakthrough in the study of low-temperature strain-induced crystallization of silicone rubber, elucidating the influence of strain rate on the low-temperature crystallization behavior of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane). This work provides a theoretical foundation for enhancing the performance of silicone rubber in extreme environments.
