Organosilicon-Perfect Combination of Glass and Organic Matter
Silicon-based inorganic non-metallic materials also have their own fatal shortcomings: poor toughness and fragility; in other words, organic polymer materials also have some shortcomings: easy aging, not resistant to high temperature. If organic polymer and silicon can be combined together, it will be a perfect material.
In 1901, British chemist Keeping reacted with Gnea reagent and tetrachlorosilane to form methyl chlorosilane and phenyl chlorosilane, then hydrolyzed and condensated to obtain the first silicone polymer: polydiphenyl siloxane, organic benzene ring and inorganic siloxane chain. Kipping did not know much about polymer at that time. He thought it might contain ketone group. So he called the polymer silicone and named the new material silicone. The term (-one means ketone group) has lasted till now.
In the 1930s, Dow Chemistry (also known as Chemistry), the largest chemical company in the United States, and Corning, the largest glass company, both looked forward to the emerging organic silicon materials and organized a team to carry out research. In 1943, the two companies invested in the establishment of a joint venture company, Dow Corning, specializing in the production and research of silicone materials, in this company, reflects the perfect combination of glass and organic matter. Dow Corning has always been a leader in silicone. Like Apple in consumer electronics, Dow Corning has been imitated and never surpassed.
